Short Mat 2023/24
This season sees 11 teams enter the Shortmat competition. Each team plays every other team once during the season.

After last night’s (6th March) final match of the league season, the teams competing in the Semi-Finals are now finalised.
The league has a familiar look with The Young Ones returning to the top of the league after a five-year absence from that spot. Maybe this marks the return of the glory days, they topped the league from 2019 back to a time before records exist (no exaggeration). They lost just two matches this season, one to The Six Pistols (compiler’s right to include this detail).
The Young Ones will face The Villains in the second semi-final on 20th March. The Villains came through a harrowing match last night witnessing Little Large playing out a draw with Fun Boy 3. A L&L win would have seen them through to the Semi-Final. The league match between The Young Ones & Villains ended in a draw so this could be a fascinating match.
The teams in the other Semi-Final were decided a couple of weeks ago. The N’s will play The Wooden Tops. Both have lost three matches this season, Wooden Tops recently inflicting defeat on the N’s in their league encounter. Revenge or dominance beckons (just trying to build atmosphere here, let’s not forget that Shortmat is about fun & social).
The Wooden Spoon final will be between Fun Boy Three and Slooper Troopers. Our data analyst tells me that Sloopers secured their Wooden Spoon place sometime around December, despite recording their first (and only) win of the season in that month. Sloopers shouldn’t be taken lightly though, they recorded a narrow-as-you-can-get 5-4 defeat in a 9-end league match against The Villains.
Fun Boys 3 made sure of their Wooden Spoon Final place by not winning last night’s match by 5 or more shots. After a slow (almost stationary) start to the season, FB3 are undefeated since their first match of 2024 at the start of January. A match of banter, beer and the occasional good shot is promised.
