2018 Tour - York
First of all a big thank-you has to go to Colin and Jan for organising another well prepared and enjoyable tour. The “Guessers” and captain’s envelopes are an inspiration.
Monday 13th August
We left the club a little later than expected due to a “blip” with the coach but Malcolm the driver soon made up time and we arrived at Wheatlands Lodge Hotel right on time.
After a substantial buffet lunch we made our way to our first games. Team A went to Copmanthorpe BC (Captain Steve) whilst Team B went to Dunnington BC (Captain Veronica). All went well until Copmanthorpe “copped” it with a heavy thunderstorm and torrential rain. The game was abandoned after 14 ends but Dunnington managed to complete their game, however, the storm caught up with them during drinks time and they had problems getting out of the bar! Suffice to say Team A weren’t a happy bunch when we eventually reached them. Travelling back though we were driving through streams and large puddles, the storm had hit everywhere.
Tuesday 14th August
This morning was free so it resulted in a few of us walking into York for a quick look around. We then set off for two more games this time to Poppleton BC (Captain Jim) and York RI BC (Captain Barbara). As far as the weather was concerned these games were uneventful thank goodness.
Wednesday 15th August
Colin gave us this day off when we all went our different ways. Some to explore York more thoroughly, some took the bus and train, ending up in Whitby and some travelled even further afield but it was a good rest from all the bowling we had done.
Thursday 16th August
It was back to bowling this day, to Harrogate in fact and two more greens and members welcomed us, Harrogate BC (Captain Derek) and Bishop Monkton (Captain Malcolm). Sorry to say these games were lost again, must be all the travelling, good food and drinking that does it! But the least said about the journey back the better. One of our members was leaving us and had to catch a train, so thanks to driver Malcolm and his hair raising driving she caught the train with five minutes to spare.
Friday 17th August
We had to say a sad farewell to the hotel, Tim and his staff who had looked after us so well, but two more games beckoned, Selby BC (Captain Colin) and Riccall BC (Captain Tony) before a hearty lunch at Selby and our journey home. Another successful tour was over in a trice but thanks to Colin and Jan we can look forward to the 2019 tour to Bournemouth.
